Boules, Algarve Tournament
Boules is a popular game, usually played on Saturday afternoons and Sundays across the Algarve. Sometimes called Pétanque or Bocce (Italy) the games can be sub-divided into two categories based on typical throwing technique, either throwing or rolling. Balls are usually thrown underhand not overhand as in baseball. On Sunday 10 March, the East Algarve tournament took place in Santa Catarina (where the market usually takes place). 50 Equipes (clubs) came together to compete against each other, playing about 150 games.

Luz sobre a Ria Photo exhibition (Light over the Rio Formosa)
Paulo Viegas is not only a member of the Algarve Photography group, but he is also the powerhouse behind the photography group f/18, based in the eastern Algarve. One of his many passions is a boat called the Golfinho, which has for a few years been lying on the beach in Cacelha Velha. It’s an usual fishing boat made of wood that can no longer make its way up the river estuary because of silt and sand erosion. Boats of this kind are rare. Paulo with others have now raised over 1500 Euros, to have the boat moved and restored. Most of the money has come through contributions and the sale of…

There was also a tree with cards and ribbons ready and available, so that people could write on the card and celebrate a woman that has meant something to them. The photos after the library event are from Min-Arifa. This event was organised by Lyndal Bale and Paula Ferra.

Women who inspire – International women’s day
Since the early part of the 20th Century there has been a day when people have come together to celebrate and mark the changes that have occurred in women’s lives. International Women’s Day (IWD) emerged from the activities of labour movements in North America and across Europe. By 1975, during International Women’s Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8th March. It is day that many countries mark and it is a day celebrated by men and women. The tradition in some countries sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. Women’s organisations and governments across the world also observe IWD…

August 24th – Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos – workshop inaugurated
Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos was a Professor of Fine Art. He was proud to be Portuguese, but spent much of his career in the UK, teaching and working at the Slade College of Fine Art, at University College, London. On his birthday 24th August, together with his wife Fernanda, he would often entertain artists and prospective artists at their home in Sintra. The triangle of travel from 1995 to 2008 when he died, was London, Sintra, and Tavira. It is in Tavira that he created a studio, with echoes of the Slade workshop space, similar lighting, equipment and of course copper plates for printing. His widow, Fernanda, recalled the places around the studio that he frequented,…

Fado and other lives – Tell me Other Fados
The Arts are suffering in Portugal! It’s a difficult time to get funding. Of course it’s not just the Arts it’s also cultural organisations, the glue of society, that are suffering. In Tavira, in the Algarve, only 4 associations have received funding this year. Some groups are still waiting for funding from last year. A theatre building was given by the Council to AL- MaSRAHtheatre group, but they will not allow the group to use it as it is not fit for the public to enter. They are one of the groups who are still waiting for the funds from 2011. Despite this, Tela Leao invited the theatre group and 4…
