Swedish writers get creative in Tavira in November

Fifteen Swedish writers will visit Tavira from 12-19 November 2016 for a week of literary and networking events. Barbara Fellgiebel from Algarve Literature Friends Association (ALFA) will lead the published writers who are planning to share some creative moments with locals. This includes readings and having fun!

A Swedish Literary Salon in Moncarapacho has been organised for Sunday 13 November at 2 pm, taking place at the Monterosa olive farm. It will bring together Swedish and German writers from across the region to share stories and music. This event has limited availability.
Contact Gunnel Dahlqvist for more information about the event at the olive farm g.dahlqvist@ebox.tninet.se

An International Literary and Musical event is also planned for Wednesday 16 November at the Álvaro de Campos library in Tavira from 6:30 – 9:00 pm. With the support of ALFA and Tavira Municipal Library, this event will bring together local performers and anyone who has a love of books, music, writing and creativity. The Portuguese writer Casimiro de Brito has said he will attend. This event will include opportunities for audience participation to either share a poem, a story, a song or music. Performances will be in English, Portuguese, German and Swedish. The atmosphere will be relaxed and supportive. To take part contact Sue Hall  sue@suehall.net

Barbara Fellgiebel said, “I am looking forward to returning to the Algarve and sharing with the group the creativity and heritage of Tavira and the surrounding area. The Portuguese culture is rich with writers, poets, and artists. Many of the group are visiting Portugal for the first time, and we are thrilled to be visiting Tavira, the birthplace of Pessoa’s heteronym Álvaro de Campos.

In Tavira during October and November a two month festival takes place that celebrates the work of the poet and writer Fernando Pessoa and especially his heteronym Álvaro de Campos. Many events including poetry readings, sculpture and children’s art work focus on this enigmatic Portuguese writer. So the Swedish writers are coming during a creative time for Tavira.

Here is an example of a student’s work drawn for the festival in 2015 by Beatriz Jesus, Class: 10.º E [Arts] from Escola Secundária Dr. Jorge Augusto Correia, Tavira.

November is also National Novel Writing Month, and a networking event is planned on Friday 18 November at 2pm, at the Museum in São Bras de Alportel. This is an opportunity to meet the Swedish writers and to take part in a short, timed NaNoWriMo writing exercise. Writing can be a lonely occupation and so the idea is to spark creativity alongside other writers.
