  • Flipside – Brazilian Literature and Music – the start

    October 6, 2013 /

Snape Maltings, in west Suffolk, is the home of Aldeburgh Music, which is renowned as an outstanding year-round performance centre.  On Friday evening, the Flipside Literature and Music Festival opened with “The boys from Ipanema”, by paying tribute to the composer and essayist Vincius de Moraes and the musician Antonio Carlos Jobin.  They “boys” (actually two men and a woman) sang and played their way through a fabulous and clear explanation of Bossa Nova, illustrating the entwining of Greek myths and African rhythms.  Author and composer, Jose Miguel Wisnik, Arthur Nestrovski, a very talented guitarist and Paula Morelenbaum, one of Brazil’s great singers, entertained and enlightened an appreciative audience. The…

    February 17, 2013 /

An exhibition of photography, video and other visuals arts was launched on the 16th of February at the Palácio da Galeria in Tavira. The subject of the exhibition is the Algarve and Andalucia “Geographies of Water and other Dreams”. Sea, rivers, mountains and hills are illuminated by the Iberian lens. The stillness before the possibility of tempest is present in some photos. Water, water droplets, heat, coloured soil, streams, creeks, forests, trees, plants, meadows, ponds, lakes, oceans, rock formations, vapour and texture are the elements that bring the exhibition into unity. The eight artists from Spain and Portugal, span a generation, with the youngest, Joanna Braganza (26), being one of…

  • Field of artistic dreams

    November 19, 2011 /

A group of artists are working together in Tavira to inspire the local community to take a step into a range of creative activities. They work together as a cultural association using creative arts. What inspires them is the desire that people will share their skills and learn together in a workshop space opposite the old Tuna factory on the road to Tavira Island. It’s a magical site overlooking the river Gilão. The studio has taken nearly a year to set up and officially opened its doors in January 2011. The studio is called Criativa Unidade and is the idea of three artists working with different mediums, Isabel Viegas, Martin Dornellas, Miguel Mastinho. They all hale…
