New – History tours of Tavira
As part of her master’s degree, Isabel Macieira has published several studies about the History of Art. She is the author of the book – “A Pintura sacra em Tavira, séculos XV a XX – estudos e inventário” (The Sacred Painting in Tavira XV to XX centuries). As a teacher between 1983-2014, she developed with various groups an awareness of local history involving the natural and built environment. So it could be said that she knows something about the city of Tavira, its heritage and architecture.
Once a month or so since September 2016, she has offered a city tour to residents, visitors and tourists. The tours are grounded in local knowledge and experience. Isabel is fluent in English, Portuguese and French. Her style, knowledge, warmth and enthusiasm has made the tours a success.
Recently she has designed and put together a new series of tours based upon Epoch. She says “I have designed the tours in Epoch periods, so visitors get a sense of how heritage and history go hand in hand.”
On April 27, 2017, at 10:30am, she will lead a tour that will follow a 16th Century map of the city of Tavira. The tour will involve a 1.5-hour active walk inside and outside the city walls.
The Map Tour has proved popular with one person writing to Isabel and saying, “Just to say thank for the interesting and informative tour of Tavira. Whilst I had observed a few of the arches you showed us I was never certain that they were original.
Now I can now point out these architectural places to our visitors, knowing they are authentic, especially as I have your map to back it up. We are so lucky to live in an area so rich in history.

The Gothic period – June 22, 2017
The Renaissance period – Date to be confirmed.
Each tour costs 5 Euros per person. The tours are for a maximum of 25 people.
Isabel also organises small and more personal tours for a maximum of 6/8 persons.
